Digital gift cards. What are they?
This question pops up such a lot, and we can understand why!
There is still a large amount of learning to do around gift cards here in the UK. It does not seem that long ago that we only saw paper gift vouchers as the only solution in this industry, that were live money, ready to spend, and could be lost or damaged in your wallet or purse.
Then came gift cards, initially in plastic form, and now seen in so many other ways, including lovely sustainable cardboard.
These were ground-breaking. Allowing stores to sell other branded gift cards, like at your local Tesco, selling an Amazon gift card on a stand, they have no value until activated at the till, so suddenly it meant that picking up a gift card at your local petrol station or supermarket is now normal to us.
Also making sure that we could spend the whole amount, as change could not be given on vouchers, gift cards look after your monies safely. Always watch for the expiry date though.
Then came along digital gift cards. Quite simply, these are just the gift card information on your physical gift card, created for you to view online, or be given a code that can be spent online.
The biggest misconception about them however, is that they can only be spent online.
This is not true in most cases! Nearly all of them can be spent in store, by showing on your smart phone, or if you have printed out the digital gift card and can then show it at the till. Some digital gift cards can only be spent in store and not online weirdly.
Digital is simply the mechanic that gets a gift card to you in the first place. Faster, cheaper with no postage, (and not affected by the postal strikes).
