Shampoos for thinning hair
Thinning hair is a natural part of ageing; most men and women notice their hair getting thinner from as young as their 20s.
But while some people embrace this part of their body’s development, for others it can be a source of anxiety and even embarrassment.
Luckily, there’s now lots of options for people who want to give their locks a thickening boost. We’ve picked out some of the best thickening shampoos on the beauty shelves for women and men, from low-cost treatments to high-end highlights.
Budget options
If you don’t want to spend much on a thickening shampoo, rest assured that you’ll find treatments for less than £5. Boots Expert Thickening Shampoo costs £3.49 (200ml); it’s designed for use just like a normal shampoo and has a gentle formula, so won’t upset your scalp’s natural balance.
Elsewhere, L’Oreal Elvive Fibrology Thickening Shampoo is priced at just £2.99 (250ml). It’s carefully composed formula claims to expand hair from within, offering visibly more body and bounce after use. If you find this shampoo works for you, there’s a whole range of well-priced Elvive Fibrology products, including a thickening masque and a pocket-sized thickness booster.
Alternatively, if you’re looking for a 2-in-1 option for the gym or travel, Fish 2-in-1 Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner might be a hit. It’s just £3.99 (250ml) and comes in a squeezy tube that’s perfect for on-the-go use.
Higher-end shampoos
If you want to invest in a higher-priced thinning hair treatment, look up Nanogen’s range of products for men and women. Nanogen specialise in hair nutrition and, although their thin hair shampoos are potent, they’re still mild enough for everyday use. Their women’s shampoo is priced at £7.95 (240ml); their men’s shampoo is a little more expensive at £8.99 (240ml) but both are suitable for users of Minoxidil.
For a thinning hair shampoo that’s a little less medicinal, try Kiehl’s Ultimate Thickening Shampoo. Established in 1851, Kiehl’s shampoos are great for anyone with problem hair. This particular formula is enriched with Omega-6 fatty acids and has a strong fanbase. It’s more expensive – £19 (250ml) – but if you only wash your hair a few times a week, it should last you the best part of a year.
Another great option is Ojon Damage Reverse Thickening Shampoo. At £20 for 250ml, you’ll want to be sure that you’re getting the most for your money – and this one’s been proven to work for many people with thinning hair. Its emphasis is on natural ingredients, including Tamanu Oil as well as corn, wheat and soy. There’s a conditioner too, to complete the treatment.
