How To Refuse To Be Invisible – by the-Bias-Cut.com
Ageism - an ugly word, and sadly as relevant as ever.
Particularly in the Fashion Industry. Yes, there are brands waking up to the maturer market, but dig a little deeper and their imagery and offerings tend to be youth focused. That, or they’re patronising, boring or frumpy.
It was this, and seeing women – like my mum – feeling irrelevant in the eyes of the Fashion Industry largely because of their age, that inspired me to start the-Bias-Cut.com – Shopping With Attitude. An online boutique truly empowering and celebrating older women, it offers stylish, modern fashion, that’s flattering and of beautiful craftsmanship and quality.
From using real 45+ women models and filters letting you shop by your body, to our Ageism Is Never In Style Forum, we want to cut through ageism in Fashion once and for all, and prove that every woman can – and deserves to – look stylish.
But many women feel they don’t deserve to look stylish– especially as their bodies change as they get older. They lose image confidence, and begin to feel invisible. So here are my top tips on how to prevent this:
-
Define your personal style
Whether you’re classic, feminine, edgy, eccentric or androgynous, finding your signature style will help you to always feel good in what you’re wearing. Style should reflect who you are on the inside so, by sticking to your style, you’ll be your true self.
-
Understand your figure
Naturally our bodies change throughout our lives, particularly during and post menopause. Clothes that once worked on your figure, may not any more. But don’t let that demoralise you – there are new styles you can pull off instead!
By understanding your shape, best assets and – most importantly – your proportions, you can find clothes that show off your figure to its best.
-
Dare to be different
Many ladies gravitate to shapes and colours because they make them feel safe. There are other pieces they’d like to wear, they just don’t feel they can.
If this sounds like you, encourage yourself to try on that other piece that caught your eye. Or, if you’re really unsure, start with a print in your ‘safe’ colour, to add a little variety. You might be pleasantly surprised. And, if not, you can just take it off!
-
Pick and choose trends
You don’t need to be bang on trend to seem up-to-date – in fact it can look a little ‘try hard’. Just find trends that work for you and your figure, and reference them as overtly or as subtly as you prefer. Just a small nod to trends keeps your look fresh and modern, whilst also seeming effortless.
-
Most importantly – love yourself
The true measure of style is confidence. Because it’s the wearer that makes the outfit, not the other way round. How you look today is a reflection of the life you’ve lived. Be proud of that, and give yourself the love you deserve to show yourself off to your true potential.
