Keep a memory journal for your grandchildren

For many grandparents, the early years before school begins are a wonderful time of bonding with grandchildren.

Bearing witness to their growth and development is one of the joys of grandparenting – because you’re not their sole guardian, you can relax and enjoy time spent together without any of the added stresses that come along with raising your own children.

The bonds made with children can last a lifetime, and for many of afternoons and weekends spent minding the grandchildren make up some of our most precious memories.

As our grandchildren grow from children into adolescents and adults, it’s not always easy for them to remember the adventures you had together in their early life.

Here you have the advantage – and by holding on to the memories and sharing them later you can delight and entertain your grandchildren with stories of their younger days.

Start a memory journal

As a grandparent, you have the opportunity to collect and catalogue all the moments you spent together when your grandchildren were very young.

Consider starting a memory journal – it can be as simple as a lined notebook. Whenever you spend time together, take a moment to sit down and write a journal entry about what you saw and did.

It’s especially amusing to look back on what they said in their younger years; subjects that fascinated them, questions they asked, discussions you had together all make for fun and entertaining reading later on.

The gift of memory

If you can get into the habit of doing this when they’re young, or even taking time to reflect back and put a few past memories to paper once they’re older, this can make a wonderful and thoughtful gift.

It costs noting more than the price of a notebook but will be a treasured and much-loved present – perfect for milestone birthdays, graduations, or even as a wedding gift.

In the end, it’s a gift to you too; you can look back together once they’re older and relive all the special times you’ve shared.
