Facts about Solitaire
Solitaire is a popular card game because it’s one of the few that can be played with just one player!

- Solitaire exploded in popularity when Microsoft added it as a default game to its pc computers. That was over 30 years ago – the game was first added to computers in 1989.
- Solitaire is also commonly known as Patience, particularly here in the UK.
- There are more variations of solitaire than any other card game. Other formats include classic, spider, pyramid, freecell and dash solitaire games.
- Though there are many different forms the game can take, they always follow a handful of general rules: a player starts with a shuffled pack and through a series of manoeuvres attempts to get all the cards arranged, usually in numerical order.
- Microsoft Solitaire was developed by an intern as a way to help people relax and get excited about using a computer at home.
- Solitaire games first emerged in the Baltic region in the 18th century, possibly as a form of fortune telling.
- The oldest known collection of patience game instructions was published in Russia, in 1826.
- Charles Dickens references a game of patience in his famous novel, Great Expectations.
- Queen Victoria’s husband, Albert, was a keen solitaire player.
