Top Five Reasons for Making a Claim on Home Insurance
Here are five of the top most common claims and how you can help yourself to reduce your risk....
We all know that having a home insurance policy can take away the financial worry of replacing or repairing items that may have been damaged or stolen, but do you know how to reduce your risk of claiming?
- Accidental Damage – the top reason for making a claim. Accidents aren’t always avoidable but there are ways of minimising them happening in the first place! Commonly pets and children are the cause of most accidents so keeping valuables out of reach is a sensible move and as DIY comes near the top of the accidental damage list either consult a professional or make sure you know what you’re doing before embarking on a major project. Accidental damage is a very useful extra to have on your home insurance policy.
- Water Leaks – the second most common claim on home insurance. Leaks happen more often during the winter months so it’s good to be prepared: make sure your pipes are lagged and your water tanks are insulated, service your boiler, mend that dripping tap, locate your internal stopcock or valve and if you have tanks or pipes in the roof make sure you let up warm air occasionally via your loft hatch to stop water freezing.
- Storm Damage – heavy rain can damage outside walls so ensure your drains and gutters are clear. Put away or secure outside furniture and check on any loose gates or fences. Also make sure to lock away any valuable outdoor items.
- Theft – although house burglaries are less common they can still happen! Be vigilant by putting in simple home security. Some of which can even be accessed remotely via your mobile ‘phone and this may have the added benefit of keeping down the cost of your home insurance.
- Frozen food – it can be expensive to replace the food in your freezer if there is an interruption of power or if your freezer breaks down. It is common to have this protection with most home insurance providers although it is always worth checking. It is also worth clearing out your freezer from time to time and discarding those unwanted or out of date or items.
