What are normal PSA levels?

Your PSA is the antigen level that is considered in order to help diagnose prostate cancer. It is normal to have a small amount of PSA in your blood and the amount increases slightly with age.

A raised PSA level may be an indication of a problem with your prostate but does not automatically mean you have cancer as PSA levels can also be affected by infection, surgical procedures, exercise and an enlarged prostate.

All men over the age of 50 have the right to a PSA test.

What are normal PSA levels?

For men aged between 50 and 60 years, a normal PSA level is expected to be up to 3 nanograms per millilitre of blood (3ng/ml).

For men aged between 60 and 70 years, a normal PSA level is expected to be up to 4ng/ml.

For men aged between 70 and 80 years, a normal PSA level is expected to be up to 5ng/ml.

For men aged 80 and over, there are no PSA level limits.

My PSA level is raised – what happens now?

If you have been tested and you have a raised PSA level, then you will be examined further. This could take the form of:

  • An examination to feel for lumps and possible enlarged prostate gland
  • A urine test (to exclude infection)
  • An ultrasound scan which may lead to a biopsy
  • An MRI or CT scan
