Get ready to embrace Silver Sunday 2017!
Silver Sunday is an annual day of fun and free activities for older people across the UK, and this year it is on 1st October!
Silver Sunday is a day in the national calendar, the first Sunday in October, when we ask the nation to pause and think about older people and celebrate their contribution to society.
Silver Sunday was launched in the City of Westminster in 2012 by Cllr Christabel Flight, Westminster’s Older People’s Champion to help overcome loneliness, after a report discovered more than a third of people over 75 said they were lonely. The aim was to celebrate older residents and to help them get out and about and meet new people.
The Lady Flight Older people’s champion for Westminster City Council and Founder of Silver Sunday says:
“We have a mother’s day, a father’s day, so why not have a day to celebrate older people? My aim now is to get Silver Sunday in the diary and on the calendar, much like Mothering Sunday.”
Silver Sunday has now burst out of the boundaries of the city and is being adopted nationally. With the help of the Sir Simon Milton Foundation, Silver Sunday has grown to the point where last year almost 650 free events were held nationwide – from the south of England to Glasgow and all the way to Northern Ireland. Thousands of older people were able to get out of their homes, attend a special event and make new friends and connections.
Highlights of this year’s Silver Sunday events include: a Walking Football Cup in Worcester, Tea with the Mayor in Cumbria, Ferry rides in Bristol, a Dance-a-thon in Chelsea, Tour the Botanic Gardens in Belfast, Workshops with the English National Ballet, Sunday Lunch in Hastings, a Craft Afternoon in Norfolk, and a Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, to name just a few.
