Trying tai chi

Originally developed in 13th century China as a martial art, tai chi is now practiced around the world.

The health-promoting exercise combines deep breathing with relaxation and flowing movement.

It’s been shown to reduce stress, improve posture and balance, increase general mobility and promote muscle strength in the legs – particularly for those aged over 65.

The benefits of tai chi

There’s dozens of benefits to trying tai chi. It’s a low impact exercise – which means it’s perfect for people of all fitness levels and a suitable activity for people with arthritis.

Research suggests it can help reduce the risk of falling among older adults because it helps with balance. Many of the movements can also be adapted for people with disability, including wheelchair users.

It’s especially worthwhile for inactive older people because it helps raise activity levels gently and gradually – a daily practice can help elderly people improve movement and maintain independence for as long as possible.

Giving it a go

If you want to give it a go, the best thing to do is find a class in your local area. Many studios offer free taster sessions and beginner introductions.

Classes are often held outdoors in city parks, making them accessible to those in the community. If you don’t know where to find tai chi in your area, you can search for a class with the Tai Chi Society of Great Britain.

There are also dozens of free videos available online that make it easy to learn and practice at home from the comfort of your own living room.

Try this one below – there’s a ten minute introduction to the practice, plus a beginner’s lesson.
