Channel 4 relives its Golden Summer
Golden scenes from the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics are shaping Channel 4’s alternative Christmas message.
Delivered by the Australian comedian Adam Hills, the Christmas cheer recalls sporting glory from the summer – but also comes with a little political bite. It is also just a little bit tongue in cheek.
Channel 4’s tagline to promote over 500 hours of Paralympic coverage was Meet the Superhumans.
The aim has been to try to challenge perceptions of what athletes with a disability can achieve.
Hills, who was part of Channel 4’s presenting line-up as the host broadcaster for the London 2012 Paralympics, said:
“And somewhere, just slightly, perceptions had shifted
“As people appreciate what they’ve been gifted
“And right round the world new voices were boomin’
“Don’t call us disabled, we’re now Superhuman
“But let’s not forget there’s a long way to go
“To support Disability, cos as we all know
“Some politicians we don’t care to mention
“Were handing out medals while cutting the pension.”
More than 11 million people watched the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games on Channel 4.
The peak audience of 11.2 million was the channel’s biggest in a decade and was four times the number that tuned in to the BBC to watch the Paralympic Games opening in Beijing four years ago.
The opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games drew a UK TV audience of 26.9 million.
