Summarising the quality of care homes around England

If a relative for whom you are responsible becomes ill to the point that you cannot look after them yourself anymore, you will probably need to begin looking into finding a residential care home for them to live in.

Care homes provide comprehensive and dignified general and medical care for people of all ages, but allowing them to take on the responsibility of caring for someone you know can be understandably difficult.

It can also be hard to decide exactly which care home your relative should go to. There are hundreds of facilities located across England; so many so that it’s not easy to decide which one you should choose – after all, you’re not the one who has to live there, but the person who does may not be able to make this decision for themselves.

With this in mind, Caring Homes has produced an online tool designed to help you narrow down the choices available to you and provide an overview of the state of residential care homes in the various counties, from Cornwall to Cumbria and everywhere in between, that comprise England.

We can see that the general standards of residential care facilities are high, with the north-west and north-east particularly good areas and the East Midlands garnering generally low scores – crucially, though, there do not appear to be any areas which offer downright terrible care, which is positive to see. The tool also shows the affluence and average life expectancy across the English counties, with the results making for interesting reading when compared to the care home quality statistics. For instance, higher-earning counties such as Surrey and Greater London often provide levels of care that do not tally with the average salary, whereas poorer counties like South Yorkshire tend to provide higher levels of care.

This tool is by no means a comprehensive guide for every care home in England – while it offers a general area-by-area picture so you can find out what to expect, the ultimate decision will made based on the quality of the care homes you tour, and there will be anomalies where high-quality care homes are found in generally low-performing counties. Armed with this information, however, you can begin to narrow down the areas you would like to examine and bring yourself a step closer to making this important decision.
