Trevor’s travels: Finding a new normal
This is Trevor, who lives with his wife near Portsmouth. A keen traveller since his time spent serving in the RAF, it’s clear that his passion for exploring only increases when it’s via a boat!
Trevor knows first-hand the impact that bowel cancer can have. Following his diagnosis in 2004, he was given the news that his treatment plan would include an operation to remove his bowel. As many others in this situation would empathise with, learning to live with a stoma was a struggle initially.

A stoma is an opening on the surface of the abdomen which has been surgically created to divert bodily waste into an external colostomy pouch. It is estimated that 13,000 people undergo stoma surgery each year, with almost 1 in 500 people in the UK currently living with a stoma. 1

Now living by the mantra of ‘nothing’s going to stop me’, Trevor’s travels are taking him even further around the world.
After over 30 years of practice voyages, in June 2015 he and his wife heard their biggest ‘Bon Voyage’ yet and set sail for the seas with the adventure of a lifetime on the horizon. This involved tackling 165 miles between France and Spain – and, with the help of the Aura Flushable pouches, it was all plain sailing. They’re hoping to head even further afield next time!
“You have to go with the wind, and the tide, and you’re just enjoying the environment you’re in – I don’t have any thoughts about pouches or bags – I just sail.”
Trevor believes that community support is essential during difficult times, and for a time he acted as a Trustee of Colostomy UK. He is a great inspiration and proof that life doesn’t have to be defined by a colostomy.
