Finding freedom with a flushable colostomy pouch
The Freedom To Be campaign
Last month saw the launch of CliniMed’s Freedom To Be campaign, which brought us a collection of real life stories from people who have gained a new lease of life since discovering a flushable colostomy pouch.
Aura Flushable with Manuka honey is the latest flushable colostomy pouch range. Both the inner liner and flange contain biodegradable materials and can be flushed in domestic toilets, septic tanks and single flush siphonic systems.
Stoma overview
- A stoma, or colostomy, is an opening on the surface of the abdomen which has been surgically created to divert faeces into an external colostomy pouch
- There are many reasons why this surgery might be necessary, e.g. cancer, bowel disease or trauma
- One in every 500 people in the UK is currently living with a stoma¹
Michel’s story
Michel is 83 years old and lives in Wiltshire with his wife Lynette. A former marketing man before his retirement, Michel started using CliniMed’s flushable pouches when they were first available to make travelling with work easier. Michel still loves to travel, socialise and enjoys regular trips to his local jazz club.
“When I used the old pouches, which could not be disposed of as easily, I was always concerned about what to do with them and how to dispose of them. The flushable pouch actually enabled me to stop thinking constantly about my problem. It released me from that constant concern. It has given me a new quality of life.”
“I can now, for example, go out in the evenings at the drop of a hat and not have to think about it in advance or worry about how to behave with my stoma in public.”
Having used the flushable pouches for the past ten years, Michel can no longer imagine life without them. “I would say you must try it, it will give you something you have forgotten about, and that’s the quality of life which is possible through the use of a flushable pouch.”
