Heart Heroes: Heart Valve Voice Speaks to Clinicians About their Favourite Patient Memories
Heart Valve Voice works with clinicians from all over the country to raise awareness and ensure that patients have access to a range of treatment options for heart valve disease. Heart valve disease is a very treatable disease when diagnosed early on and with advances in medical technology, patients are being given more options with regards to the type of treatment they may receive.
Once treated, many patients find that they are able to return to a good quality of life and can often return to work, caring for their families and participating in the activities they once enjoyed. We recently attended the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery (SCTS) Annual Meeting in Glasgow where we took some time to speak to the surgeons in attendance and asked them to recall their fondest patient moments.
There were some wonderful stories of patients getting back to being active and doing the things they loved the most. Here are some of the patient memories that the surgeons shared:
Betsy Evans, Cardiac Surgeon at Leeds General Infirmary told us about a patient who was 84 and wanted to be able to celebrate her Golden Wedding Anniversary with her husband:
Joseph Zacharias, Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Blackpool Victoria Hospital recalls his patient 92 year old Norman Thorpe who’s ambition was to complete a book that he was writing:
Inderpaul Birdi, Cardiac Surgeon, Basildon University Hospital who’s patient memory included two sets of identical twins who all needed valve disease intervention:
Neil Moat, Cardiac Surgeon, Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals talks about his patient who was desperate to play with his grandchildren but couldn’t until after his valve treatment:
