Making the most of seasonal produce: Our favourite recipes
Summer may be on its way out, but with the changing of the seasons comes a whole new world of opportunity to enjoy seasonal produce.
This autumn, you can enjoy delicious ingredients such as blackberries, beetroots, figs, pears and pumpkins. Find inspiration on how to get the most out of them with our recipe ideas below.
Fresh and fruity
Blackberries are delicious whether popped on top of cereal, adding sweetness to your favourite yoghurt or whipped up into a smoothie. However, in this recipe, you can truly make a delicious dessert from the juicy berries in our Summer Pudding. Full of flavour, serve it up with a dollop of cream, creme fraiche, or even plain yoghurt for a healthier alternative.
A versatile ingredient
There’s much more to the humble beetroot than simply a pickled side dish – although it does make a tasty addition to a cheese sandwich. Beetroot can be enjoyed in both sweet treats and healthier dishes, for example, it adds a wonderfully moist texture to this recipe for Chocolate Cake, while when accompanied by ginger, carrot and apple, makes for one vitamin-packed smoothie in this recipe for our Beet The Blues drink.
Figs-a-plenty
Figs come into season around autumn time, making them a real treat as the weather changes. You can serve them on their own with your favourite cheeses, or branch out and create a delicious chutney to complement sandwiches, cheese boards and pork pies this season. Try our tasty recipe for Spiced Plum Chutney, featuring cinnamon, ginger, cranberries and more.
A pair of pears
Pears are one of the more versatile fruits. Thanks to not being overly sweet, they make a deliciously balancing accompaniment to savoury ingredients such as Stilton and meats such as sausages. Here, you can try them in our recipe for Parma Ham with Caramelised Pears – it’s quick and easy to make, taking just ten minutes in total, leaving you plenty of time to spend with your dinner guests.
Not just for Halloween
As well as being a delicious ingredient for soups and stews, pumpkins also make a fantastic alternative as dinnerware! In this recipe for vegetarian Pumpkin Chilli, not only can you enjoy the delicious flavour and texture it adds to your dish, but you can also use the hollowed out gourd to serve up a portion – an extra quirky addition to a dinner party table.
