Celebrating 80 years of Yakult!

Your chance to join the exclusive anniversary event at Strawberry Hill House

This year marks 80 years since the Yakult product was first developed – and you could be joining in the celebrations this October at London’s historic Strawberry Hill House.

Yakult’s history dates back to the 1920s, when the young scientist Dr Minoru Shirota began studying the pioneering work of Nobel Prize winner Elie Metchnikoff. Inspired by Metchnikoff’s findings, Dr Shirota began researching bacteria – succeeding, after many years, in selecting and cultivating a strain of bacteria robust enough to survive in the intestines. In 1935 he used this unique strain, Lactobacillus casei Shirota, to make a fermented milk drink – resulting in the first ever bottle of Yakult.

Fast forward 80 years, and today more than 30 million bottles of Yakult are consumed in 33 countries around the world every day! And yet the core product has changed very little: each bottle of Yakult contains the same unique strain of bacteria as cultivated by Dr Shirota all those years ago.

And now you could be a part of the exclusive 80th anniversary celebrations, taking place this October at Strawberry Hill House. In celebration of Yakult’s anniversary, the event is open to the nation’s ’80-somethings’, each of whom will be invited to bring a guest (of any age!), to enjoy a private tour of this spectacular 18th century gothic castle and afternoon tea in the ornate Gallery.

Yakult is giving away 12 pairs of tickets, so if you are aged 80 to 89 – or you know someone who is! – please visit www.yakult.co.uk/teaparty and fill in the entry form. Entries must be received by 22nd September; full terms and conditions can be found on web page.

And whilst you’re there, why not explore the Yakult site and find out more about the fascinating history of the product and company: did you know, for example, that Dr Shirota named his drink after the Esperanto word for ‘yogurt’, hoping that one day it will be available all over the world? Or that there are 39,000 Yakult Ladies in Japan – some of whom, as well as delivering the product, carry out ‘Courtesy Visits’ to check on the wellbeing of elderly people? For a little bottle, Yakult certainly has a big story to tell – so join in and be a part of the celebrations!
