5 Homemade edible gifts in a jar
Your own homemade gift will go down a storm this Christmas
Homemade gifts are always extra special and these are particularly easy to make. Simply take a decorative jar, fill it with something delicious and wrap it with a ribbon or some twine. Perfect!
And the bonus is every part of the jar gift is useful—even the jar itself.
Chocolate Fudge Brownies
These Chocolate Fudge Brownies in a jar are so easy to put together, with ingredients you may already have in your cupboard – you may even have a jar ready to use too.
Ingredients:
- 1 Litre Jar
- ½ tsp Salt
- ½ tsp Baking Powder
- 95 g Plain Flour
- 35 g Cocoa Powder
- 75 g Plain Flour
- 135 g Soft Brown Sugar
- 150 g Caster Sugar
- 100 g Chocolate Chunks
- 100 g Fudge Chunks
Instructions:
-
Ensure your jar is very clean before starting and completely dry.
-
Starting with the salt, baking powder & 95g of plain flour, layer the ingredients in order as listed, pushing each layer down before the next.
-
Once you reach the top, add some scrunched-up grease-proof paper to any remaining space between the ingredients & the lid to stop them from being knocked out of place and ruining the layered effect.
-
Finally, add a label with instructions on how to prepare
Label with: “Combine the contents of the jar with 150g of melted butter and 3 beaten eggs. Mix well and pour into a 9″x9″ lined tin. Bake at Gas 4 / 180°c (160°c for fan oven) for 25-30 minutes.”
Christmas biscuits in a jar
Each jar holds all the dry ingredients for a favourite cookie recipe. All the lucky recipient needs to do is add fresh butter, eggs and milk, then bake.
You will need:
Flour
Sugar
Baking Powder
Chocolate Chips
Raisins/cranberries
Cinnamon
Oats (depending on your recipe)
Card with your own message, twine or ribbon
Fill each glass jar with the recipe ingredients in layers, so it looks nice and stripy, then seal tight with the lid. Wipe up any spillage so the jar is clean.
Design your card, add cooking instructions and punch a hole in the top and tie it to the top of your jar with twine or ribbon.
Hot Chocolate Snow Globe
A hot chocolate kit in a jam jar will go down a treat with the grandchildren.
Make a marshmallow snowman with strawberry laces for a scarf and chocolate button or his hat. Add your favourite hot chocolate dry ingredients. Attach a label with instructions to add warm milk and decorate with a ribbon.
Baked Camembert Kit
A cheese-lover’s dream! Quite simply a jar of boozy marinated sultanas with a box of camembert to warm in the oven.
Heat 100g of sultanas and 5 tbsp of alcohol such as sherry, rum or brandy together until just simmering, then turn off the heat and cool completely. Spoon into a small jar and seal. Put the jar on top of the cheese and tie together with string or ribbon.
Triple Chocolate Cupcake Kit
Ingredients for chocolate cupcakes that any chocolate lover is sure to appreciate
Tip 100g caster sugar into the jar, followed by 100g flour, then finally 2 tbsp cocoa, so the ingredients sit in layers. Seal the jar.
Wrap 200g white chocolate drops and a 100g bar of milk chocolate in cellophane. Tie a spatula or spoon onto the jar with ribbon and pack in a gift bag or box with the chocolates, sprinkles and cupcake cases.
Remember to include cooking instructions and tie to the jar.
