Initiative for mature enterprise
A former care worker has been helped to set up her own business offering knitting workshops.
Self-starter Liz Pacey, from Hull, has turned her life-long passion for knitting into a thriving business, thanks to what she learned at a free course from The Prince’s Initiative for Mature Enterprise.
The charity, which was established by Prince Charles, is dedicated to helping over-50s explore self-employment.
Liz was inspired by the independence of flexible working through her job as a home visitor for the blind and, in a brave move, decided to give up her job to become her own boss.
The 59-year-old had a suspicion that she could turn her creative hobby into a profitable business, but needed business advice to get her idea off the ground.
She attended the charity’s course, Preparing To Run Your Own Business, and now Liz has set up Knitsperation Hull, which offers the knitting workshops.
Liz said: “As I’m close to 60, I was worried that no one would take me seriously as a self-employed businesswoman. However, my experiences with The Prince’s Initiative for Mature Enterprise, made me think about myself in a different way. I am loving self-employment.”
The charity is returning to Hull on November 29 to again offer the business start-up course. It runs from 10am to 4pm, and continues on January 10 and February 7. It is part of the charity’s efforts to reduce unemployment among the over-50s in Hull by providing the tools that will allow them to become their own boss.
Nick Bunting, chief executive officer of The Prince’s Initiative, said: “We are overjoyed to see that the course is helping people like Liz take their first steps in self-employment. This course brings us one step closer to our ambition of supporting all entrepreneurs over the age of 50 start their own businesses.”
