How to save money with the latest energy technologies
Want to save money and cut down on the amount of energy you use? Get up to speed with the latest developments in energy technology and you could save a packet on your gas and electricity bills.
Smart thermostat
We’ve all been there: you’ve left the house in a hurry, forgotten to switch off the heating and returned to a home hotter than a sauna! Having a smart thermostat installed means you can manage your energy on the move via a smartphone, tablet, or computer. Alternatively, you can use a smart thermostat to leave the heating off until just before you get in, so that you don’t waste energy heating an empty house but still come back to a warm home.
Smart thermostats can tell you how long it takes for your home to reach a certain temperature so that you can manage your heating system to ensure your home is always at the temperature you’d like. In the long term, this should lead to significant savings. Most smart thermostats will also display your real-time energy consumption to allow you to see just how much energy you’re using at any given time.
There are plenty of smart thermostats to choose from. First Utility’s Cosy lets you keep an eye on how much energy you’re using, and you can set it to come back on just before you get home. You can get a free Cosy with the fixed iControl energy tariff, where you’re guaranteed to pay a fixed price for three years regardless of changes in energy prices.
Energy monitors
Have you ever wondered how much your electronic devices are costing you? An energy monitor will have the answer. It’s a portable handheld screen that works alongside your current energy meter to show you just how much you’re spending, allowing you to cut down accordingly.
An energy monitor won’t save you energy but it will help you moderate your habits to cut your gas and electricity bills. According to the Energy Saving Trust, an energy monitor could reduce your energy usage by anything between 5% and 15% in the first year of use, which could be a saving of £25 to £75 on a £500 bill.
Energy monitors are not to be confused with smart meters.Smart meters allow your gas and electricity supplier to accurately monitor your gas and electricity usage remotely, so you can say goodbye to having to provide meter readings and your bills will be completely accurate. They’re currently being rolled out in a bid to encourage homes across the UK to cut their usage and save money.
