You’d be forgiven for feeling that US states get far too much attention. They are, after all, merely regions, albeit with strong identities and political autonomy. How many of Germany’s 16 states could you name, or the 13 regions of mainland France?

But whether through films, politics, or the insufferable number of pop songs about California, a number of US states have indelibly printed themselves on the global consciousness.

How many can you recognise from a simple silhouette?
