‘Còsagach’ is the Scottish lifestyle trend set to take over in 2018
Get to know this cosy Celtic buzzword.
If you love nothing more than slipping on your cashmere pyjamas, lighting a scented candle and bundling up in a blanket, you’ll probably be au fait with the hot concept of Hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”).
The Danish lifestyle trend has dominated our Instagram feeds and bookshelves over the past few years, helping stressed out British workers to adopt a more Scandi way of life – from foraging and baking to tree climbing and wearing knitted socks.
But if you’re getting tired of seeing #hygge on every winter post you scroll past, we’ve got some good news for you – there’s a new lifestyle trend that’s set to dominate next year, and it sounds more chilled than ever.
According to VisitScotland, ‘Còsagach’ is about to become very big news for people who love sheltering with a cup of tea in rainy weather.
Translating from the Gaelic word for feeling snug, sheltered and warm, the Scottish phrase has been identified by the tourism agency as one of the biggest lures to the country for the four million tourists that visited this year.
It’s comes as no surprise to Scots, given that the country was named the most beautiful in the world by Rough Guides earlier in the year, thanks to its craggy castles, deep lochs and wild glens.
According to VisitScotland, Còsagach is all about recreating the Scots’ sense of peace by rambling to a cosy pub on a wintry day, or wrapping up warm and walking in nature when the temperature drops.
“Scotland is a country where Còsagach can be achieved in all seasons, but it’s winter when it comes into its own,” VisitScotland writes on the trend.
“With tranquil seascapes, vast open spaces and many warm and welcoming pubs, Scotland is a perfect place for your wellbeing.
“When the storms rage and the waves crash against the rocks, there is nothing more satisfying than being curled up in front of the fire.”
Well, it sounds pretty marvellous to us.
If you fancy beating the winter blues and getting your Còsagach on, we suggest you pack your snuggliest winter knits and book a trip to the Highlands pretty sharpish.
It definitely won’t be long before the rest of the UK catches on.
