Which is your favourite 60s song?
The decade was transformative for music, marked by an explosion of innovation, cultural change, and genre-blending that forever reshaped the soundscape of popular music.
The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Dusty Springfield were beginning their journeys to icons – and ambitious studio techniques pushed the boundaries of what pop and rock music could be. Genres such as folk rock, psychedelic rock, and soul hit the mainstream.
At the same time, the explosion of youth culture helped music become a central force in shaping societal norms. The 1960s was not just a time of musical innovation, but a period when music became a voice for change and identity, making it one of the most special decades in the history of music.
The transistor radio fuelled that change. At last, you could turn on a radio and hear what you wanted to hear – and take it with you wherever you wanted. No longer were you constrained by what your parents enjoyed on their huge valve set in the living room.
With official UK radio stations not yet rising to the challenge, radio dials were tuned to Radio Luxembourg on 208 – or to one of the pirate stations dotted around the coast, beaming the hits of the day to our eager teen ears.
Roger Day was on board several of the pirate stations – then aged 21 – playing many of the iconic 60s hits as new releases.
Now, aged 79, he’s playing those songs again on Boom Radio. You can hear Roger every weekday afternoon from 2pm, with a blend of great oldies – and make a date on Saturday mornings from 8am for two whole hours dedicated to the ‘60s. Enjoy the huge hits you danced to and formed the soundtrack to your youth – plus some real hidden gems. Those songs you really have not heard for 60 years.
You can hear Boom Radio across much of the UK on DAB+, or just ask ‘Alexa, play Boom Radio’.
