The Very Best of Petula Clark
Born 15th November 1932 in Ewell Surrey as Sally Clark, Petula, her stage name, was invented by her father.
She made her radio debut in 1942 at the age of nine while trying to send a message to an uncle stationed overseas. The BBC broadcast was delayed by an air raid and so the producer asked if anyone could try and settle the audience. She volunteered to sing and was such a hit that she went on to appear almost 500 times in programmes designed to entertain the troops and became known as Britain’s Shirley Temple.
Petula Clark went on to have one of the longest-serving careers of a British singer, spanning more than seven decades. She is also known for performing in musical films, stage musicals and for success in singing in French, German, Italian and Spanish.
