The radio station for our generation!
Radio is very special to us. Alone in our bedrooms years ago with the radio on – or dashing around clutching our tranny – radio was the soundtrack to the happiest of days.
We grew up with the excitement of the pirate stations, Radio Luxembourg, the early days of Radio 1 and of the first local commercial stations.
Sadly, there are not many radio stations aimed at us any more!
That changed in February 2021 when a couple of semi-retired chaps who’d spent their life in the radio business got a few old friends together, cashed in some of their pension and dared to launch a station just for our generation.
Boom Radio broadcasts across the UK. It plays music from the 1960s and 1970s, although there’s a dash of older material and just a few fresher tracks too.
The songs are played by a host of familiar names including ‘Diddy’ David Hamilton at lunchtimes, TV’s Judi Spiers, the great Jenny Hanley, the old pirate broadcaster Roger Day, Graham Dene and Nicky Horne from the early days of London’s Capital Radio; and Les Ross – one of the most famous Birmingham broadcasters.
“This is just so much fun”, says David Hamilton. “It’s great to hear again from listeners I last heard from back in my Radio 1 and Radio 2 days”.
Boom has no premises. All of the presenters broadcast from their own bedroom or attics.
“We wanted to create a friendly station where we and our listeners could feel at home, not least as other stations seem to be becoming less and less appealing with their choice of music or presenters”, says co-founder David Lloyd
“The comments from our listeners really touch us. They seem to really value the station – both for the presenters and for the wide range of music. We certainly dig deep, rather than play the same songs over and over again”.
David confesses that sometimes the demands of Boom, night and day, can be exhausting. “Retirement will have to wait – you’re never too old for a new adventure.”
Boom Radio can be found on DAB across much of the UK; and also online on your phone, laptop or ‘Alexa – Play Boom Radio’.
