The magic of radio
Radio’s always been special to our generation.
When growing up, apart from the teen mags plopping on the doormat once a week, it was the only window on the world outside – beaming out all the exciting fresh new ‘60s and ‘70s records on the pirate radio stations or the new BBC Radio 1 through your little new tranny.
Hearing those old tracks again now reminds us of those exciting days, not least if it’s a song you have simply not heard since you were 16.
Boom Radio, the UK DAB radio station for baby boomers prides itself on digging out those musical treasures as David Lloyd the co-founder of Boom Radio confirms:
“We’ve lived through a fascinating era musically – and we try to echo the rich variety on Boom. Listeners tell us they get sick of ‘songs on a loop’ on other stations, so we draw on a library of thousands. Obviously, that includes the stomping big hits but often there are forgotten gems – songs which were huge at the time but simply haven’t been played since!”.
Boom Radio was established three years ago by David and his colleague Phil Riley as they felt that radio these days was just not what it was – and failed to address the tastes and interests of older listeners. That’s despite an incredible 92% of us over 55s tuning-in to the radio each week – according to official figures published this month.
But, as many listeners will agree, the appeal of radio’s always been more than just music.
“We are touched so often by the messages we receive from our listeners. It’s flattering that they regard Boom as just really good company – a real pick-me-up.
They say that hearing voices again like those of our David Hamilton, Simon Bates, Judi Spiers, Nicky Horne or Roger Day is like picking up a conversation with an old friend. They were there in our lives when we were younger – and now they’re back”.
Boom is available on DAB+ across much of the UK – or you can ask Alexa.
Boom Radio can be found on DAB across much of the UK; and also online on your phone, laptop or ‘Alexa – Play Boom Radio’.
