Listen to your Favourite Christmas Songs with Boom Radio
Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without hearing Wizzard’s Christmas anthem I Wish it Could Be Christmas Everyday in every shop, pub – and just about every radio station.
This year, the song marks its 50th anniversary!
Aside from Roy Wood’s impressive vocals, the track boasts the familiar sound of the huge old cash register till at the start – and the children’s choir singing ‘when the snowman brings the snow’ as the song fades.
Those nine children were recruited from the Stockland Green School in Birmingham. Aged eleven or twelve back then, the ‘first-years’ will now be aged in their sixties.
1973 was a big year for Christmas songs as Wizzard fought for the Christmas Number One trophy against Slade’s oft-released Merry Xmas Everybody. Replete with Noddy Holder’s familiar festive cry, the origins of that roaring track date back to 1967.
As a little snow fell that year in Scotland and Northern England, Elton John’s Step Into Christmas was also released.
Which is your favourite Christmas song?
Thousands have been released over the years – from the joyful to the novelty; from the traditional to the contemporary. The wistful White Christmas is likely the most famous, featured in the 1942 musical film Holiday Inn and emerging as one of the best-selling songs ever. It’s said Irving Berlin penned the song on a warm California day in August. Bing Crosby was the first to perform it – poignantly not long after the Pearl Harbor attack.
Boom Radio, the UK radio station just for baby boomers, has once again been inviting votes for your favourite festive songs – a hard-fought battle.
In last year’s Boom Countdown, Greg Lake took the top spot with I Believe in Father Christmas; followed closely by the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl – and Slade.
Will Greg Lake prove the most popular again this year? Enjoy four whole hours of the top Christmas songs from Perry Como to the Ronettes; Chris Rea to Harry Belafonte; Mud to the Carpenters as the Christmas Countdown unfolds on Saturday 23rd December. The show starts at 10.00 a.m.
You can find Boom Radio on DAB or ask Alexa – also on your phone, tablet or laptop.
