British writer Georgette Heyer is one of the most prolific writers of the last century.

Over the course of a career that spanned more than five decades, she published over 50 novels. Her sparkly and witty regency romances established a genre and have never gone out of print.

Heyer’s brilliant attention to detail, witty dialogue, spirited heroines and handsome heros have made her a favourite with readers of all generations.

Faro’s Daughter

Published in 1941, Faro’s Daughter tells the story of the beautiful – but poor – Deborah Grantham, mistress of her aunt’s gaming house in London. Here she meets Max Ravenscar, a wealthy gentleman determined to prevent his young cousin from an ineligible marriage. An insult from Ravenscar leads Miss Grantham to to take her revenge in a rollicking story that charts the fine line between love and hate.

The Grand Sophy

First published in 1950, The Grand Sophy is one of Heyer’s most popular novels and is currently being made into a movie. It tells the story of Sophia Stanton-Lacy, who comes to stay with her cousins after her father is sent on a diplomatic mission. Outgoing, smart and independent, Shopy sets the household alight and begins a battle of wills with her tyrannical cousin Charles.

Frederica

Determined to give her beautiful sister Charis a coming out to remember, Frederica moves her sister and her two boisterous young brothers to London and applies for the help of a distant connection, the rich and handsome Marquis of Alverstoke. Initially reluctant to help, the Marquis finds himself drawn into the scrapes of this vibrant young family and intrigued by the strong-minded Frederica.

Regency Buck

Regency Buck is the first of Heyer’s novels to combine her two genres – romance and mystery. After the beautiful Judith Tavener and her brother Peregrine encounter Julian St John Audley, the Fifth Earl of Worth, in regrettable circumstances, they both agree he’s an insufferably arrogant dandy. Unfortunately for Judith, he’s also – quite by chance – their legal guardian, in control of their fortune and with the right to consent or refuse his permission to her marriage as he choses. What follows is a brilliant caper where our heroine is constantly wondering, is the Earl of Worth her friend or foe?

Sylvester

Sylvester, the wealthy Duke of Salford, is considering marriage. How inconvenient when his intended, Pheobe, flees her home rather than risk becoming engaged to him. Despite their mutual revulsion, Pheobe and Sylvester are reluctantly embroiled in a number of adventures together that leave both with the realisation that perhaps first impressions aren’t always as they seem.
