Book of the month: Away with the Penguins, by Hazel Prior
“Away with the Penguins” by Hazel Prior is a heartwarming and entertaining novel about a woman named Veronica McCreedy who decides to embark on a journey to Antarctica to see penguins in their natural habitat. Despite being in her 80s, Veronica is determined to fulfil her lifelong dream of seeing these beautiful creatures up close, and in doing so, she learns a great deal about herself and the world around her.
Veronica is a complex and well-rounded protagonist who is both endearing and frustrating. She is fiercely independent and unapologetic in her desires, which makes her a refreshing and inspiring character to follow. The author does an excellent job of bringing her to life, and readers will find themselves rooting for her throughout the novel.
The setting of Antarctica is also beautifully depicted in the book. The harsh and unforgiving landscape is vividly portrayed, and the descriptions of the penguins and their behaviour are informative and entertaining. The author did her research, and the details she includes about life in Antarctica add a layer of authenticity to the story.
The novel is also full of heart and humour. Several poignant moments will tug at readers’ heartstrings, but plenty of laugh-out-loud moments keep the book from feeling too heavy.
Overall, “Away with the Penguins” is a charming and delightful novel. With its engaging protagonist, beautiful setting, and uplifting message, it is a book that will leave readers feeling inspired and uplifted. I highly recommend it.
