Looking for volunteers for Make-a-Wish
One of the most unique and rewarding volunteer roles in the country is now open for recruitment. This is a great opportunity for Silversurfers to use their time and skills in a meaningful way and positively impact children’s lives.
Do you have good listening skills and the ability to build rapport quickly? Do you have experience of working with children and families and knowledge of current trends among children and young people? Would you like to invest your time and skills in something meaningful?
If your answer to most of these questions is ‘yes’, apply to become a Wish Visitor with Make-A-Wish UK and help children begin their journey to have their One True Wish granted and see young lives transformed.
Make-A-Wish is the UK’s largest wishgranting charity. The team helps seriously ill children realise what their One True Wish is and then turns it into reality. The wish can be anything from seeing a favourite West End show, meeting a life-time hero or visiting Disneyland. One of the most important parts of the journey is finding out what the wish really is. That’s the role of Wish Visitors.
In the role, volunteers contact the families referred to Make-A-Wish, organise visits and during the visit helps the child explore their favourite colours, stories and experiences and more in order to discover what their One True Wish might be.
Adrian Dixon, who’s been volunteering with the charity for nearly 10 years, describes the experience: “Being a Wish Visitor means so much to me. To go and see the children and know that this is the start of a life-changing experience for them is fantastic. On many occasions, the parents have told me that the wish has changed the child’s way of thinking making them believe that if they can do this, anything is possible.”
It’s a great volunteer opportunity for people who’ve got valuable life experience and want to use it in a meaningful way. It’ll make you feel connected to your community and make you feel a part of something bigger.
“Being a Wish Visitor makes me realise how fortunate I am. It’s a unique role and there is nothing that will give you more pleasure. I’ve also helped out at some of the wishes and to see delight on the child’s face is amazing. Become a volunteer with Make-A-Wish – it will be the best thing you’ve ever done. It’s a role you won’t find anywhere else” – says Adrian
