Best job search & recruitment websites
The Internet has had a huge impact on the job market – businesses have been able to evolve and become more connected than ever. It’s altered the way we communicate, work and apply for jobs.
One of the advantages of this is that it makes looking for work more convenient. Many employers post job listings directly to their websites, and there are dozens of sites that make it easy to search and apply for jobs all in one place.
If you’re thinking of changing jobs, starting a new career or going back to work, the Internet is a great place to start your search and get in touch with potential contacts to network with.
If there is a particular company or organisation you’re interested in working with, the best place to start is on their website. Many larger businesses have their own hiring portal where they post available positions, and will ask you to fill out an application form and add your CV directly from there.
Factoring in your age
In the UK, employees are protected against direct and indirect discrimination in the workplace by The Equality Act 2010. This is the law that protects against ageism in employment, education and training and covers age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.
Because age is not allowed to factor into the decision whether or not to hire someone, job websites specifically for over 50s don’t exist. You’re entitled to apply for any role that you’re interested in and feel qualified for without declaring your age and have the right not to be discriminated against because of it.
Finding a job when over 50
One of the advantages of using a job search website is that you can filter your search and tailor the results to you. Most sites will give you the opportunity to specify everything from location to salary, experience, industry, education and job type. Even if you only have a basic idea of what you’re looking for – for example, a part time job in sales – narrowing down your options will help ensure you don’t waste your time. Some of the most popular sites to search for jobs include:
Monster.co.uk – Although at its core Monster is a job search engine, the site’s advanced features have made it a favourite with applicants. You can find and apply for roles directly from the website, as well as get advice about everything from writing a strong resume to interview tips. Particularly if you’re entering or re-entering the job market for the first time in several years, the additional resources Monster offers can help ease your mind and make the process go smoothly.
LinkedIn – Touted as a social network for professionals, LinkedIn works in much the same way a service like Facebook does; you build a profile and connect with contacts, send messages, and can post to your followers. The key difference of course is that LinkedIn has been designed to be strictly for professionals and business networking. Many employers post jobs directly to LinkedIn and recruiters will often browse through members to find the best people. If you’re looking for work, building a LinkedIn profile is a great way to reconnect with people you’ve met and worked with over the course of your career, share your experience and provide additional information about yourself and your accomplishments.
Jobsite – Jobsite is another destination for employees and recruiters alike. You can search through the thousands of job listings, or upload your CV and let a recruitment specialist come to you. Jobsite has a helpful career advice section that covers topics like redundancy, salary and workplace issues. They also have a number of career tools like legal advice and a CV check in the event you need any additional support during any stage of the process.
