Where to find the best afternoon tea
Afternoon tea is one of Britain’s most treasured institutions – and with good reason. There’s little better to warm the soul more than some tea, cake and sandwiches as the day is winding down, with some pretty tea cups and a scenic backdrop to set the mood.

Betty’s, York
For many people, Betty’s is synonymous with York. This classic tea room was founded in 1919, and it is the quintessential spot for afternoon teas and other celebrations in North Yorkshire. Betty’s gets very busy – there’s often a queue out the door – so make sure you reserve a table in advance. Afternoon tea costs £18.75 per person; add a glass of Champagne, and it’s £26.50. The Goring, London
In 2013, The Goring was given the Top London Afternoon Tea Award by the UK Tea Guild, so you can be sure it’s worth your time. Located in Belgravia, it’s a short walk from Buckingham Palace at St James’ Park, and you can be sure that it’s suitably regal in setting – and, naturally, price. The Balmoral, Edinburgh
Edinburgh’s Balmoral is the city’s most iconic hotel: it’s home to the formidable clock tower that sits at the East End of Princes Street. Afternoon tea is served in the stunningly opulent Palm Court; it costs £29 on weekdays and £35 at weekends. The Spa underneath is wonderful as well: book a treatment for just before your afternoon tea to make the most of a day at the hotel. Find more here
Blythswood Square, Glasgow
On a shopping break in Glasgow? Get a table at Blythswood Square to enjoy some post-shopping relaxation at the city’s most elegant hotel. Here, there are a few different, delicious menus to choose from. Afternoon tea is priced at £22 but you can add on a glass of Moet or Chandon champagne too. And remember, you can’t reserve a table at weekends so be prepared to wait. Find more here
The Lowry Hotel, Manchester
Just a short walk from the shops of Deansgate, The Lowry Hotel is one of Manchester’s most stylish places to eat, drink and stay. Afternoon tea is served from 2.15-4pm on Monday-Saturday and 3.15-5pm on Sundays. It’s priced at £22 (£33 with Champagne) and the menu changes every month, so you can be sure that it’ll be different every time you visit. Find more here
