David Hamilton’s career on radio has spanned a staggering seven decades.

In his new book David Hamilton’s Long and Winding Road, he chronicles his remarkable journey from a remote farm in Sussex to a broadcasting career across the UK and America.

During his National Service in the RAF, David became one of the first DJs to play rock’n’roll music – and one of the first to interview a very young Cliff Richard! A tape of that precious recording has recently emerged where Cliff spoke of the thrill of meeting Jerry Lee Lewis. Four years later, David conducted one of the first TV interviews with a new band called The Beatles – and he introduced them on stage.

Moving to the BBC, he was on-air hosting Family Favourites on the final day of the BBC Light Programme in 1967, as it closed down ready for the new BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2. Then, on those stations, his afternoon show became enormously popular – and our generation remembers ‘Tea at Three’ – and of course those ‘Hamilton’s Hotshots’ where he picked the most promising new releases.

These days, he’s still on-air – the oldest broadcaster to host a regular daily show on UK national radio.  On Boom Radio – the station for UK baby boomers, he plays a great range of 60s and 70s songs and loves to read listener emails.  He also plays some of old Hamilton’s Hotshots once again, and observes whether his choices had been wise!

In David Hamilton’s Long and Winding Road, David talks about his delight at being invited to be back on the radio regularly, now aged in his 80s.  He also reflects very honestly on the ups and downs in his life – and the relationships which did not always go to plan. Plus, there are great memories of his Top of the Pops appearances, major beauty contests and working with comedy legends like Ken Dodd, Benny Hill, and Tommy Cooper.  Few people have lived a life quite as fascinating as David Hamilton’s.
