When a smile came

When a smile came

Step out of the shadows and walk in the Sun,
For life, and its living has only begun,
Forget what you had and what you did in there,
When cruelty stripped you and gave you despair.

When dark days gave birth to the blackest of night,
And you did not have the strength to argue or fight,
When all that enfolded was not liberty,
And you never dared hope, you would ever be free.

But you found the strength and with eyes opened wide,
Discovered a far better place just outside,
Outside of that prison that held you each day,
And you lifted your head high and you walked away.

You found a deep pride that was holding you down,
And the Sun beamed again from your strife,
Time scaled back the scars and life gave you a crown,
And a smile came again in your life.

You now beam with pride, for what hurt you inside,
Has gone, – been destroyed, swept away – from this place,
And a life has returned from a once black divide,
When that smile came again and remained on your face.

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
