Top tips for weed control without chemicals

While chemical herbicides are effective for controlling weeds, there are also several natural and non-toxic ways to manage them. Here are some top tips for weed control without chemicals:
Mulch:
Spread a layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips, straw, or leaves, around plants to suppress weed growth. Mulch also helps to retain moisture in the soil and adds nutrients as it breaks down.
Hand weeding:
Remove weeds by hand by pulling them out at the root. This method can be time-consuming but is effective for small areas and young weeds.
Solarisation:
Cover the soil with clear plastic for several weeks during the hottest months of the year. This will heat up the soil and kill weeds and their seeds.
Smothering:
Cover the weeds with cardboard or several layers of newspaper and then cover them with a layer of mulch. This will smother the weeds and prevent them from receiving sunlight and air.
Vinegar and washing up liquid with salt:
Ratio: one gallon of white vinegar:1 tablespoon of washing up liquid:1 cup of salt
- Distilled white vinegar, apple cider vinegar, or cleaning vinegar. To be the most effective, the acetic acid concentration in the vinegar should be above 11% to burn and kill the plant.
- Dishwashing liquid. This acts as a surfactant to help the vinegar cling to the weed’s surface longer.

Blend all thoroughly and then funnel the weed killer into a plastic spray bottle.
Spray directly on the weeds. The acetic acid in the vinegar will dry out the weeds and kill them. The soap helps the vinegar and salt solution coat and adhere to the weeds. Be careful not to spray on desirable plants, as vinegar can damage them as well.
Boiling water:
Pour boiling water over weeds to kill them. This method is effective for small areas, but be careful not to pour boiling water on desirable plants.
Manual tools:
Use manual tools such as hoes, cultivators, and weed pullers to remove weeds. These tools can be effective for large areas and for reaching weeds in hard-to-reach areas.
By using these methods, you can control weeds without resorting to chemicals. Remember, it’s important to remove weeds before they go to seed to prevent them from spreading and becoming a bigger problem.
