Invisible

In honour of a wonderful elderly gentleman called Marvin whom I had the fortune to come across whilst on holiday last week.  All he wanted was for somebody to spare a few minutes of their time to chat with him.  To save him from feeling so lonely and forgotten.

Invisible

My eyes caught yours as you sat on the chair
I sensed your sorrow, your depths of despair
A life well lived is what I could see
Behind those old eyes, a young man used to be

With summer in full swing, the streets were bustling
With the breeze from the sea and the tall trees rustling
Most folk rushed by without even a glance
But I noticed you, so I took my chance

With a smile and hello, we started to chat
It’s good for the soul, I’m sure about that
You told me some tales of your journey through life
And how life had changed since you lost your dear wife

You’d moved to the coast to be near to your son
But your days were now missing the joy and the fun
You’ve been on this earth for 88 years
The more that we talked, your eyes filled with tears

You said even your neighbours don’t talk to you
You’re lost and so lonely, right in plain view
You walk to this bench each day filled with hope
Of just a small chat, to help you to cope

You thanked me profusely for taking the time
But I assure you my friend, the pleasure was mine
I hope that our chat brought you comfort a while
As I looked back at you, I was met with a smile.
