How to help garden wildlife during a heatwave
With temperatures soaring yet again in many parts of the UK take a moment to consider how your garden wildlife is faring.
Along with tragic reports of baby hedgehogs dying of dehydration, birds, insects and reptiles will also be struggling in the heat.
Here are a few simple ways you can help.
Water
If you don’t already have a pond or bird bath in your garden then leaving out a shallow bowl of water will not just help any thirsty birds but will also provide much-needed water for mammals or insects. Just be sure to place a small stone in the centre to help any insects that may fall in.
Provide cover
A messy garden can be a welcome haven for wildlife. Rocks, stone slabs, rockeries and tall grass can provide cover for frogs, toads and newts seeking shelter from the sun.

Bird bath
If your garden has a bird bath then ensure it is topped up regularly with fresh, clean water as birds need to bathe regularly to keep their feathers in good condition.
Top up feeders
Another tip for bird lovers is to keep any feeders topped up, or you can scatter food like soaked raisins and apple chunks on the floor.
Ponds
Ponds are also important for many creatures so if there is no rainwater left in your rain barrel to help top it up then tap water can be used but little and often.
