Top Of The Pops

Top of the Pops

A new show was broadcast every Thursday night
When Top Of The Pops came on tv much to my delight
It was launched by the BBC on January 1, 1964
Showcasing the Top 40 hits and the weekly No. 1 score

The DJ introduced the acts while dancers took to the floor
A show that heralded a pop institution many generations would adore
The Rolling Stones Dusty Springfield & The Dave Clarke Five
Opened the show with The Hollies and The Swinging Blue Jeans all appearing live

While filmed shots of Freddie & The Dreamers were shown plus Cliff Richard and his band
Concluding The Beatles were No 1 with ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’
This is a glimpse of ‘the swinging sixties’ introducing TOTP
Along with the fashion revolution by Mary Quant and the mini skirt made it an exciting decade of history
