Will you be making a romantic gesture this Valentine’s Day?

A visit to the shops this week tells us that Valentine’s Day is almost upon us. Full of romantic cards, love hearts and all manner of ‘Valentine’ paraphernalia, shops are tugging on our heartstrings to encourage us to buy.

But Valentine’s Day divides opinion.

Some say 14th February has become just another overly commercialised day without real meaning whereas others embrace it, seeing it as an opportunity to stop and celebrate the person you love.

Modern life is so busy and stressful that for many, finding time to stop and relax with their partner can be hard to achieve and Valentine’s Day, even though it’s only one day a year, gives them the chance to do just that. You can plan something special, do something thoughtful, or use the occasion to exchange gifts.

However, many are of the opinion that showing someone you love and value them shouldn’t happen on just one day a year.

In fact, due to the overt commercialisation of St Valentine’s Day, chocolates, flowers and a visit to your local restaurant can translate into spending much more than it would normally cost on other days of the year.

And if you’re not in a relationship at all, Valentine’s Day can be a lonely occasion.
