Christmas Reverie
Christmas Reverie
As Christmas approaches once again I become lost in reverie
Of childhood celebrations at home with my family
Our home was a terrace house two up two down with a kitchen and customized bathroom
Roaring coal fires warmed each hearth dispelling winters gloom
Every December it was transformed with our treasured Christmas decorations
Every one unwrapped filled us with joy and yuletide expectations
The Christmas tree was trimmed and took pride of place at the parlour window
Its twinkling lights and ornaments admired by neighbours dashing to and fro
Shiny paper sashes and bells were hung from each main floor ceiling
Tinsel placed around those rooms were decorative and appealing
Every year a fresh turkey was purchased from the market stall
Hung in the pantry for about a week before roasting I do recall
A beautiful aroma soon filled the house of sweet mince tarts and Christmas cake
Shortbread and other delicacies Nanny chose to make
On Christmas Eve lots of friends and family came to call
Exchanged gifts shared a glass made toasts to one and all
Santa Claus arrived and left us gifts sometime in the night
Our first glance on Christmas morning filled us with sheer delight
Later the festive table was laid out it was totally wonderful
The turkey and trimmings were delicious followed by sherry trifle as a rule
This Christmas reverie comes to mind at this time every year
Reminding me of the gift of family traditions and all that we hold dear
