Pets are welcome at Sunrise Senior Living
Sunrise Senior Living, the specialist residential, nursing and dementia care provider, recently welcomed two new additions to its Sunrise of Fleet community, as residents were joined by two friendly companions – Remi, an American Ragdoll kitten and Barney, a Cockapoo puppy.
Pets are a central part of everyday life at Sunrise communities, and most have one or two living there full-time, providing comfort and companionship to all residents. Sunrise of Fleet residents were delighted at the latest arrivals, and named Remi the cat after the community’s Reminiscence Neighbourhood where she will spend most of her time.
Pets have real benefits for Sunrise’s residents. As well as providing comfort and familiarity, they can be wonderful memory triggers for those living with dementia who cared for animals earlier in life. Numerous scientific studies have demonstrated the health and emotional benefits of pets – HelpGuide.org, for example, reports that pet owners have lower blood pressure and are less likely to suffer from depression than those without them.
Pets are also great fun, entertaining residents and guests. Sunrise encourages all animal-friendly residents to engage with the community pets as much or as little as they like through feeding and walking, helping them maintain an active lifestyle.
Sunrise of Fleet resident, Pamela Harding, said:
“I love the cat. Her real name is Remi, but I like to call her Pussy Willow as she has the same colourings as the Pussy Willow tree.”
Selina Sapsford, Director of Community Relations at Sunrise of Fleet said:
“I am touched by what a huge impact these animals are having on our residents. We felt it was very important to have both Remi and Barney from an early age so they can get used to growing up at Sunrise. They bring a real smile to everyone’s faces.”
Katie, Activities Assistant at Sunrise of Fleet said:
“When our residents see the animals it sparks off some great conversation, and we spend ages chatting about other pets they have cared for.”
