Broken Aspirations

Broken aspirations

Just a little mention for the ladies on this page,
Who worked in their own industry to sixty years of age,
Who paid their own insurance stamp, and in all honesty,
Expected their retirement,  but this was not to be.

Suddenly the ‘winning post’ was moved 3 furlongs on,
And any hope of a pension book was snatched away, and gone,
No time to make adjustment, to balance out your life,
Just told you must continue, to be a ‘working wife’.

Your dreams and aspirations were quickly blown away,
By a government extension, of your retirement day,
And while you cannot finish, while you must carry on,
The hope for any young employee has vanished and has gone.

The thousands upon thousands, of pension that you lost,
Is held in the Exchequer to cut this Nation’s cost,
At least you would have thought, it would be for, a ‘rainy day’,
But no! – Oh no! – this government, will give it all away.

You will not hear a murmur, from those who made this rule,
For they are not affected, but they treat us as the fool,
For we must bear the brunt of this and work for three more years,
With broken aspirations, and a wallet full of tears.

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
