Wet Weekend

I was hoping to go walking but its going to be a very wet weekend in the Midlands, I don't mind getting caught out in the rain, cycling or walking, but I'm not keen to set out in heavy rain, I guess I'll console myself with housework.

I hope it doesn't cause anymore flooding, many folk must just be getting straight from early in the year.

Wet Weekend!!! More like a wet week! First dry day in about 10 days. I fear it's going to be a long wet winter here in Wales. No chance in the garden, Daffs and tulip bullbs still not in the earth. I lost a lot of plants in the greenhouse due to the Big Freeze, so will have to make a clean sweep and start again - but that's life if you garden! There is always "Better luck next year!"

I have not done much today either, only the necessary chores, but I did put on my wellies and raincoat to ride out in my daughter's pick-up to check on livestock. near-by. We passed the old Horse chestnut tree in the Rectory garden which has really turned to Autumn colours, I don't suppose there will be many conker fights this year! I'll be putting a match to the wood fire in the hearth soon and settling down with the TV and the dogs, or maybe a book. Waiting for the rain to pass and get back into the garden!. I'm pleased to have put up the bubble plastic lining in the greenhouse yesterday. Cosy in there!.

My wife used to get me to collect conkers in the belief they helped deter spiders. I havent bothered since her passing and havent noticed a difference other than the place looks tidier without them around the house.

I have never heard of conkers deterring spiders before! They always move in at this time of the year though.I used to be terrified of them until I had children of my own and had to be the one to pick them up in a duster and return them outside. I have one that lives under an old marble clock kept on the hall windowsill He or probably she does such a good job of catching the flies that I leave her in peace now as another one moves in otherwise!

I'm not so bothered about them but my wife would throw a bit of a 'wobbly; with them, hence the 'conkers' which I think was an Old Wives Tale. It kept her happy to think she had a deterrent to them taking up residence.

I agree Len. I like to go out for a walk too but not when it's absolutely chucking it down. I live quite close to a river and some nearby residents suffered horrendous damage during the last floods. Fortunately our block of flats is fairly safe from flooding, but having said that we all had to move our cars out of the underground parking area during the last floods.
Is it really less than three weeks since I was sitting out in the sun chatting to neighbours !!! I love the British seasons but unfortunately as soon as Autumn arrives my poor old joints start to sing out with the inconvenience of arthritis.
It looks like being a w/e of reading, listening to my local footy team on the radio, and tv sport for me, but hopefully the rain will ease so that I can get out for a wander and a bit of fresh air.

I hate being couped up, but it hasn't been as bad here as elsewhere and I still managed a couple of small walks with a reluctant dog. Which team do you support Shrew, I am a long time 'sympathiser' of Birmingham. At least supporting them its taught me to cope with life's adversities. I'm safe here from flooding but not far away is the River Severn which snakes a couple of hundred miles collecting rain water. It invariably bursts it banks in the lower reaches..

I'm a Mighty Shrew Len. This is my 70th year going to watch them (or as the case may be at the moment, NOT going to watch them). I'm about 300 mtrs from the River Severn, so lots of nice riverside walks around here.

I bet it hurts not to go to watch them, especially with Bolton being next up. That would be a good game to put in a performance in front of a home crowd. Shropshire is a beautiful county I haven't explored as much as I'd have liked to but hopefully will do soon. There are so many places yet to discover, quite close to home.

Lets hope Oxford can put in a performance like Shrewsbury are at the moment, the place would be rocking if the crowds were let in, their 2-0 up at half time. how do you think they'll get on tonight MossyStone

Oxford had a really good season last time until losing a couple of quality players, and then they faded a bit. The Shrews will probably finish mid table again unless things change for the better. We seem to boss the 1st half - home or away - and then run out of steam. Miss going to the games though, and I do think the fans make a big difference for the home team. I missed my cricket as much as the football this year, although I was lucky enough to watch some of the local games involving Shrewsbury's teams. It's going to be a long Winter methinks !!!!
