Captain Tom

Captain Tom

Who reflected our intention, whose spirit gave us heart,
When normal life was broken with loved ones kept apart,
Who gave to us the notion that we had to carry on?
Captain Tom.

Who showed the British spirit to support this sacred land,
Who held the torch of hope aloft within his aged hand,
Who shocked us with his confidence of life when this is gone?
Captain Tom.

This man who walked, and walked again for all we cherish dear,
This man who never faltered despite his elder year,
Whose medals gleamed upon his chest as the Sun upon them shone,
Captain Tom.

He lifted up our spirit, held our hearts and helped the fight,
Gave a cause that grew among us to recover from our plight,
Just so small within his stature, yet a giant from thereon,
Captain Tom.

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
