Getting care at home
When simple everyday things such as shopping, cooking a hot meal or getting washed and dressed become more difficult it may be time to think about having some help at home.
Regardless of your financial circumstances or indeed those of your relatives, local authorities in England, Scotland and Wales have a duty of care to carry out a care needs assessment if you feel you would benefit from help with everyday living.
The needs assessment will consider your current situation and the support, if any, you have available to you. Based on this assessment your local authority may identify the need for certain services for you. Local authorities have a duty to provide some services although others may be at their discretion and possibly subject to a charge.
Everyone’s care needs are different and may also vary during periods of illness or may increase with time. It is important to think through the care you may need at an early stage so provision can be put in place if and when the need arises.
Services that your local authority can provide range from equipment for the home, Meals on Wheels to residential care facilities. Your local authority should be able to provide you with all the information you or your family need to make the best and most appropriate decision for you and your needs, now and in the future.
