Meet Nicky Felix, founder of box2, a collection of stylish, well-cut clothes and versatile accessories designed to flatter every figure size 14 to 32.

Mum-of-two and now grandmother of three, Nicky lives in the beautiful countryside of West Sussex. It took Nicky years to feel confident about the way she looked, as she explains here. “Teenagers are sensitive at the best of times, and I wasn’t your average teenager. At 16, I was 5ft 10in tall, a size 16 and a redhead. It was difficult to find clothes I liked and that would fit me, so in the end I made my own.”
After finishing a business course in 1973, Nicky moved to Italy, where, far from being an issue, her size was embraced – literally – as she met and married her Italian boyfriend. “He taught me everything I know about fashion and we opened a boutique; the first in Italy to sell jeans. The country always has been known for its sense of style, so the little shop was an instant success.
Sadly, the marriage ended, and Nicky came back to the UK and her hometown, Brighton. It didn’t take her long to realise that, when it came to finding stylish things to wear in larger sizes, very little had changed on the high street. “I decided to do something about it,” she says and opened her famous shop in Brighton, selling clothes in a wide range of sizes and accessories too. “I thought; why shouldn’t larger women have the same choices as everyone else?”
More and more people came to the shop and liked the way the clothes looked. “Even more importantly”, Nicky adds, “they loved how they made them feel – more confident and happier in their own skin.” “It gave me a thrill to see celebrities like Judy Finnigan and Fern Britton wearing our outfits on TV.”
To make the collections more accessible, box2 later switched to mail order. “Making women’s lives that bit easier, is at the heart of what we do. Women are pleased when they find us, as they have often been made to feel like outsiders.”
