How to create a wildlife garden with the grandchildren this summer
Summer is a wonderful time of year to spend as many days as possible outdoors, especially with the grandchildren in tow.
A brilliant way to keep the little ones occupied this season is to create a wildlife garden for you all to enjoy. From birds to bugs and beautiful blooms, follow our simple steps and create a whole new habitat in your home together.
Start a compost heap
Compost can be a really handy resource to use across your garden. It’s also a fab environment for worms and other bugs to thrive in. Start by collecting leftover uncooked food, and mixing it with your garden waste and some compost soil.
You can get handy kitchen bins specifically for collecting your compost in, and it also doubles up as a great way to teach the children about making the most of food waste.
Get planting
Choosing the right plants is another way you can encourage wildlife in your garden. Wildflowers are often popular choices for critters, such as Delphinium, Malva Rosea and Centaureas. You can also incorporate Achillea, Polemonium and Verbenas. These types not only look beautiful, but will encourage bees, ladybirds, dragonflies and shieldbugs among others.
Don’t forget the birds
One way you can encourage birds into your garden is to start leaving food out for them. Even if at present you only seem to welcome a resident pigeon, try leaving a few hanging bird feeders around your garden and wait for the birds to start arriving. You might need to wait a day or two before you start noticing any new visitors, but you can have endless fun keeping a record of all the new species that arrive.
Planting berried shrubs is also a great way to attract birds into your garden, as they can provide a suitable source of food during the winter months.
As well as enjoying setting up your colourful wildlife garden together, make sure you all regularly check back to see how it’s getting on. You might need to look very closely, as critters such as woodlice will like to stay in the dark, but you’re sure to have endless fun spotting birds, bugs and beauties all summer long.
