Cycling

I am new to this so not sure if I am doing it right.

I live in Torfaen, South Wales and am looking for suggestions for a cycle route which is on the flat, I cannot do hills because of my knees and alas where I live is surrounded by hills.

My poor bike has been in the shed for 2 years now without seeing the light of day.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Hi Stupot I'm a lifelong cyclist and a member of Cycling UK, in conjunction with the local Authorities I believe they do cycling training. I believe its not just for kids but all ages under the organisation name of 'Bikeability'. I've lost a lot of confidence on busy roads and now seek out quiet lanes. There are also quiet traffic free routes on Disused Railway Lines and Canal Towpaths. Look for the Blue and Red Cycle Path Signs, put up by Sustrans. Worcestershire is particularly well served with these. I hope find some of the enjoyment I've always derived from the freedom on a bike.

One of our kids has an ebike and I have tried it-amazing. I read that in Holland 40% of all bike sales are ebikes-in a flat country. It is a great experience!

Hi. I’m 68 but a brain tumour survivor when I was 66. I live just on the border of south east London opposite an open space which I take my dog to on a walk. I did go on a cycling holiday to France about five years ago and on the last day used an e-bike. It was fantastic. I hope to be moving shortly and will not be so close to to a green or park so I am thinking of purchasing an e-bike both to take my dog out and to join a local cycling club. Wish me luck

That sounds a good idea sunglasses nanna. I wish you luck. You have to make the most of things and try to be creative with your solutions. Sounds like you are doing that!

Hi Valerie. Biking has become a great release for me mentally and physically. Many hills here in UpState New York. Albany area. I can’t help in finding a route as I don’t know the area, ( would love to get to Wales someday), but find a flat area, maintain revolutions and enjoy the scenery.

Hi

Just signed up, so I am new here too..

Would you like some help and suggestions?

I live in Yorkshire and it's flat and hilly here too.. I managed to pick up an electric bike which has helped me get my strength back in my legs. The big key feature on this type of bike is that it pushes you along with no extra effort.

I can now walk alot better and faster now. Bear in mind I have had two knee operations in the past.

Hope this helps you.

If have any questions please feel free to contact me back.

Kindest regards
Galib

ebikes are amazing and I read that last year about ten times the amount sold in the Uk were sold in Germany. I borrowed one from a neighbour and absolutely loved it. It was an incredible experience and while easy I did feel I got some exercise out of it and even better fresh air and a feel good factor.

Hi ValerieH66 I have the same problem I don't like hills so I bought an electric bike and its great. If you don't want to buy a new bike do a search on the internet there is a company that will adapt your own bike into an electric one.
Response from Wilf made on 20th Apr 2020 20:09:17
Hello Kay21. Please can you let me know about the company that adapts normal bikes to ebikes-many thanks-Wilf

Hi.

There a great investment.

Bear in mind. There are loads of different options you can get on ebikes.

Standard battery with variable speed settings.

Recharging while going down hills. Or self recharging.

Kits to be fitted to standard bike's.. But consider whether to bike can take the Extra weight stress it may cause.

But your best option is to do your research. As their are loads of new bike design's and better lightweight bikes coming in the market.

Finally find a good retailer near you. Just incase you need to buy spare parts.

In all cycling is moving towards all ages of cyclists. And it's not cheating to be riding one.

Hope this helps.

One of my neighbours has an ebike which he let me on a few weeks ago. It is not only soft on my knees it is really great fun. When all this current virus time is over I may splash out on one if I can pay monthly on a zero interest deal.

Sorry I dont know the area, so not much help there. I use an e bike, without it I wouldn't be biking at all. I was told that almost any bike can be converted, there is a kit available. I believe you need a new back wheel that contains the motor, then you have a wire that goes to the handle bar. There will be more to it than just this, but may be worth looking into?

Hills are not a problem, even with bad knees, as long as the gears on your bike are low, really low. A local cycle shop can sort this out for you.

In the mean time get on your bike and cycle for a short time and when the first hill comes along get off your bike and walk. Many people think they have to ride a bike all the time. Slowly build up your strength and those knees etc. In a few weeks you'll be cycling for many miles.

Enjoy
