Getting a good night’s sleep has never been more fashionable.
In the last 12 months dozens of books dedicated to helping us sleep better have been published and along with it a number of stats that highlight just how important rest is.
According to neuroscientist Matthew Walker, sleep helps us live longer, lowers food cravings, protects us from cancers and other diseases and helps prevent cold and flu and ward off depression and anxiety.
Much of the information comes as no surprise; we all know how much more difficult things feel when we’re tired, and how a good sleep can make all the difference.
And while there’s plenty of useful, common-sense advice out there to help us sleep better, it’s not always as simple as it seems.
Many people have difficulty sleeping; stressful life events, transitions like menopause, shift work and raising a young family are just a few common reasons why sleep might prove elusive at different times in your life.
