Our pick of the best travel shots from the Sony World Photography Awards
Including huddling penguins, grand vistas, and an adorable upside down seal
Move over David Attenborough – this year’s Sony World Photography Awards features some of the finest wildlife and travel photography lenses can capture.
A wide-ranging competition covering everything from street portraiture to architecture, we’re limiting ourselves to highlighting some of the best shortlisted travel shots on offer.
Here are just a few of our favourites…
Greg Lecoeur took the plunge in the Farne Archipelago off Northumberland to capture this magnificent (and extremely curious) fur seal. We’re still working out whether those are eyes or extremely large nostrils…
If we’d been fixed by this fox’s piercing gaze, we’d have legged it. Fair play to Kuwaiti photographer, Msaaed Al Gharibah for sticking around and getting the shot…
An unedifying portrait of Kuitun Grand Canyon in Xinjiang, China, we wouldn’t be surprised if this photo gets picked up by NASA to represent water on Mars…
Sometimes photography is as much endurance as artistry. “It was worth standing for hours in minus 10 degrees to capture this,” said Canadian photographer Sandi Little…
This shot of huddling baby penguins was snapped in Antarctica by American photographer Nadia Aly. We don’t know about you, but we’re getting traumatic flashbacks to Dynasties…
A chiaroscuro masterpiece that Caravaggio would be proud of, we reckon this is about as visual as jellyfish can be. Our compliments to Spanish photographer Angel Fitor…
A photograph so gloriously kinetic it seems to shift before your very eyes, Tracey Lund captured these submarine gannets just off Shetland…
A worthy alarm call if ever there was one, Roslan Nasir was mountainside at 4am to watch the sun rise over Mount Bromo, Indonesia…
Which one is your winner?
