Could sustainability be your New Year’s Resolution?
It’s that time again. Time to start setting goals for the new year. Aside from attempting to use that gym membership, or drink that green smoothie, perhaps you tried a different kind of ‘green’ living instead?
Environmental sustainability has taken centre stage recently with both individuals and businesses taking on the task of reducing their own footprint. From the growth in reusable products, to plastic bag bans, there’s a multitude of ways the world’s becoming eco-friendlier. Largely because it’s becoming harder to ignore the impacts, so how can you start implementing this in your own life?
Say goodbye to disposable, and hello to reusable
Coffee cups, clothing, food wrappings, and more. These are some of the ways that the everyday person can switch up a small habit and become an eco-warrior. Some stores may even provide an incentive for bringing reusable products along with you (hello discount!).
Beyond these common editions to the home, there are other ways to incorporate sustainable products into your everyday life. According to UK company Recycle Now, nearly 16 million plastic bottles were estimated to have not been recycled in 2016 alone. This includes Shampoo and Conditioner bottles. Many eco-friendly brands like Lush and Ethique offer alternatives that are solid and last longer than their bottled counterparts.
Ditch ‘fast’ fashion
Another big factor contributing to waste production is the mass consumption of clothing. How many times have you bought something only to throw it away after a short period of time? Some ways of reducing this waste is to either hold onto the clothes you do have for as long as possible before donating them or spending a little extra to have high-quality, ethically made products that will last a long time.
Besides, spending a little more for bespoke quality means there’s more of an emotional attachment, and therefore less inclination to throw it out. OFX customers Benjamin Siggers and HOLOS Knitwear are an example of companies that create bespoke, ethically-sourced products that are built to last a lifetime.
When hitting the road, consider taking the slow route
You’re about to head off for a trip, a different city, or state, maybe even overseas. Using transport options like planes or your own vehicle may seem like an easy or convenient option. But for today’s global citizens, it’s worth considering taking the road less travelled by taking public transport options like trains or buses.
While not entirely eco-friendly, you’ll still be contributing to fewer emissions than if every person on that train or bus used their own car or flew by plane. A bonus is the opportunity to really appreciate the world going by from the comfort of a window seat.
So, it’s come time to start setting your intentions for the year. Why not put reducing your environmental footprint to work and switch up some daily habits for something more sustainable? It’s better for you, and the planet!
